The Ambassador's Mission
Trudi Canavan

Reviewed by Gail Jamieson

Book One of the Traitor Spy Trilogy

The Kyraliaian's need to know more about their neighbor and enemy Sachaka. Lord Dannyl agrees to take the unwanted post of Ambassador but he needs an assistant. Lorkin, apprentice Black Magician pleads to be appointed to the post. His mother, Sonea, a fully fledged Black Magician does not want him to go.

The city of Imardin abounds with intrigue and the Thieves and Magicians have an uneasy truce. Each is afraid of the other. Cery, a Thief finds that his family have been assinated and wishes to find the culprit. He must form an alliance with Sonea.

Once in Sachaka Lorkin becomes involved with the illegal Traitors who wish to abolish slavery. He is taken captive but then goes along willingly in order to see justice done.

Trudi Canavan writes very entertainingly and we are swept along with the story, which in truth is yet another fantasy tale where the protagonists are Magicians and those who wish they were Magicians.

I enjoyed this first part of the trilogy and will look out for the next.
